One Day At A Time

On rainy mornings she drinks Earl Grey
tea, with dry toast and remembers
the tarnished silver necklace, with your picture inside.

At mid-day she goes alone to the garden
and sits alone in your place,
between the pair of cherry trees,
and thinks alone of all the times she wasn’t.

At night when quiet creeps under
her skin and threatens to still the rhythm
of her heart, she sings French, German and Italian.

She sings in perfect time, but there is no harmony.

Falling Stars

Stars reflected in your hands streaked with grease
as they shifted across the soundless void
and followed by a mind that would not cease
they revealed what was all but destroyed.

A motor hums as you track Callisto
and I wonder if it’s really the sound
of the stars and moons whispering their woe
because your home is not on their ground.

What secrets exist in the space between
your lens and their atmosphere, I can’t tell.
Only the planets know the things you’ve seen
and the warmth of a heart I can’t compel.

For what fell between us we cannot atone,
and even together we’re always alone.
