Kate Young 1962 House: on the edge of town Beyond the house rests a chicken ranch With plenty of cage free chickens Farther down the road is a pasture There lives a cow named Lucy and a horse named Beauty Clear of the pasture is the woods Where forts are built and arrowheads are found Frogs sing on the corner of Fourth and Broadway One song: this spring wetness New Found Love
Dark sweater― Shorn of fine curly flat hair― Bottle green, veiled in wine Its threads Remind of sea grass, hair salt― Exquisite, mislaid. How large How magnanimous This body’s heart Beats falteringly― Under love’s blind burden. What kind of body shapes such A self This well-upholstered couch Out worn Faded green felt, unveiled. There hung the dark sweater No hanger, just floated there in space, Outer Like a spacecraft, suspended. Jumps out Out from its sky black! A beacon of fair warning, Pinned to its ribbed cuff Flickering Bright bold letters: I FOUND SOMEBODY NEW! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kate Young is a graduate student at Metropolitan State currently enrolled in the Masters of Liberal Studies.
