Welcome to the Summer 2010 issue of Haute Dish!

May 8, 2010

As the Haute Dish submission deadline approached this semester, I found myself nibbling my nails anxiously while the clock ticked toward midnight. The summer issue of Haute Dish has traditionally been a rather slow one, with so many students preparing for graduation and enjoying the beautiful spring weather. What if all my class visits, email blasts, and incessant pestering had been in vain? Would I lose my street cred as Managing Editor? Would I be forced to eat my stale vending machine Rold Golds and watery coffee in the Founders Hall basement bathroom to avoid the ridiculing laughter of my peers? Most importantly, would I ever again strike fear into the hearts of Administration with open mic flyers teeming with sexual innuendo?!

Suzanne Nielsen, our faculty advisor, emailed me the afternoon of the deadline: "Do you think we'll get 100 submissions?" Optimistically - and I generally do not qualify as an optimist - I replied, "I bet we'll get 104. ...Maybe."

Well, it's my pleasure to announce that we not only hit 104 submissions - we bypassed it in leaps and bounds. The total number of submissions of prose, poetry and art we received for this issue was 134. In fact, it's the second highest number of submissions we've received since the launch of Haute Dish in 2005! WOW!

Thanks to the generosity of SAFAC and Student Senate, our budget for the upcoming fiscal year is nearly quadrupled from previous years. This means some big changes are in store for Haute Dish. For starters, we will be printing hard copies of every issue -- and they'll be available (for free!) on campus.  Look out for this issue in print by mid-June.

The deadline for our Fall issue is August 16, 2010. Once again, all students, alumni, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit original written work, art, and multimedia pieces for consideration! Our submission guidelines are located here.

Keep an eye on our events page for upcoming readings, contests, workshops and more! Better yet, follow us on Facebook and we'll keep you in the loop.

Finally, a huge round of applause to all who submitted work to this issue. Haute Dish wouldn't be possible without you - so keep on sending in your fabulous creative work!

Respectfully,
Alicia Catt
Managing Editor
