I sink into my seat, my toes in
dust accumulated on the dash
and roll my khakis, one leg at a time

I find relief in freed ankles, shins,
damp cotton bunched below knees

I turn to face her,
away from unfamiliar
landscape:
hay bales stacked, decaying
man-fashioned lakes,
old wooden docks

And I can’t help but smile

Fearless, together
Through air of dried flowers, sweet
crumbling of concrete

We drive
