Summer Haute Dish Reading!

Join us Saturday, May 5, 8 p.m. at the Riverview Cafe, 42nd Ave and 38th St, Minneapolis, for the next reading! In addition to Haute Dish writers reading from the Summer 2007 issue, for the first time we'll be showing art from the upcoming issue.

The last reading was STANDING ROOM ONLY so come early!

As always, many thanks to our host, The Riverview Cafe & Wine Bar!

On behalf of the Haute Dish staff and Metropolitan State University, let me personally welcome you to the Spring 2007 edition of Haute Dish.

Haute Dish doesn’t issue a theme to writers. So inside you’ll find a reflection of the diversity of Metro State. You can read fiction, memoir, personal essay and poetry on subjects such as a fine bottle of cognac, closet doors that can break your toes, or a father balancing parenthood and academics. You can read about finding where real flowers grow, buying happiness, or finding a job with Santa.

Whatever you fancy, you’ll find it here. I hope you enjoy these selections as much as we do.

We are once again highlighting the arts community. Guest writer Ellen Rice reviews a reading by Debra Marquart. Editor Misha Jameson writes about guest alumni editor Andrea Worth, who works at The Loft. Editor Rebecca Haven gives us a peek at an exhibit in the Third Floor Art Gallery last semester. And outgoing managing editor Dan Ratté interviews photographer Dean Muldoon.

The editorial staff of Haute Dish, however, is disappointed to have Matt Spillum leaving our ranks as he graduates. Matt, we will all miss your hard work and dedication to Haute Dish. I will miss your friendship and humor at meetings and in class. In honor of Matt, we have created a page with links to all of his written contributions to Haute Dish, sixteen in all, including one poem and three prose pieces from this issue.

Many thanks to everyone who supports Haute Dish, and to those who helped spread the word about submissions. But I want to make a special shout-out to the Writing Center. The staff printed, hand-colored, and posted our submission flyer everywhere: on the door, on the windows, on the reception desk, on the side tables, on the bulletin boards. You get the prize for creativity and enthusiasm. What that prize will be is yet to be determined. Suggestions anyone? Email them to me at hautedish@gmail.com.

Many thanks also to my wonderful collection of editors, who made this issue fabulous. Our guest alumni editor was Andrea Worth, who works at The Loft in the education department. Thank you, Andrea, for your time and expertise. Thank you Becky Haven, Matty Spillum and Dan Ratté for returning and bringing your wisdom and enthusiasm. Thank you and welcome to new editors Emily Urness, Josh Fisher, Misha Jameson, and Jessie Lundquist.

Lastly, thank you to Suzanne Nielsen, Haute Dish faculty advisor, for your guidance and encouragement.

N. Jeanne Burns
Managing Editor

P.S. If you missed the December 2nd reading, you can check out photos of our wonderful writers and staff here.
