harvey pekar at twin cities book festival
Mike Lang

Wearing the same clothes he would to the grocery store, Harvey Pekar spoke with Mary Lucia about his new book, Quitter at the October, 2005 Twin Cities Book Festival at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Lucia, from 89.3 The Current, was very excited to interview Pekar, the author of American Splendor.

American Splendor, a series of autobiographical graphic novels that Pekar has been writing since 1976, has gained mainstream attention with the 2003 movie of the same name. With this new attention, Harvey has had more opportunity to focus on other writing projects. In his new book, Quitter, Pekar shares experiences growing up into the man he is today. Pekar is currently working on a couple of new projects, as well as restarting the American Splendor comic series with DC Comics.

In addition to talking about his work, Pekar also discussed his views on subjects brought up by Lucia and some audience questions. He expressed his dissatisfaction for the actions of our current President, his concern over global warming and his opinions on his appearances on David Letterman’s show. He also spoke about his appreciation of how well the movie turned out and shared a little about his writing process.

With such a large portion of Pekar’s life publicized in his novels, there is very little he refuses to share with his audience. In fact, the only things he won’t share are things that would get him in trouble with his wife.
