county fair
Nate Thomas

the stick dogs walked
when giants rolled their
gravy heads

as the shrimp rank and file
blacked the barbeque wire
tight-roping their tiny legs

and Candy Polly
all sticking and stalling
bared her gartered thigh

while Steamboat Pete
with his muckle-jacks on
whistled up his bosun’s pipe

there’s an ice cream hook
and a belly dance girl and
lightning fish trails in the air

while taffy arms pull
the dew drop skulls open
donut hole mouth surprise

and the moon pulls
the crowd like a spring
which has sprung

the moon

pulls the crowd

like a spring

which has

sprung

Their faces made sticky
by the marmalade sun
