Purple

This year wrap me in purple.
As I find my passion again.
Color my nails.
And pick a purple purse.
Remind me I’m not just living,
But, baby, I’m alive!
Purple like when my momma knew me.
           And I was a stunner.
Purple like dancing in Vegas.
          And a hit of oxygen.
This year wrap me in purple.
Purple prayers and purple people.
    Purple dreams coming true.
              Purple me.

Letter to a Stranger

What must it have been like for you?
To spot the girl,
      Tank top and shorts,
            Thumb to bum a ride
From the skinny edge of the highway
Don’t pick up hitchhikers didn’t occur to you
And when my brother appeared
    From behind the bushes
You swung open the door and said,
“Get in!”
You strained to study us
In the rear view mirror
With such concern
 “Kids! You’re just kids!”
You said.
You, with your New York accent
Made me feel I was in a movie
My brother sitting there
Spinning the story
With a touch of truth and
The greatest emphasis on hesitation
Like you might register if it were true
You, stranger, bought it all
And gleamed with determination
To do something
Then, I thought you were old and wise
Now, I see you were
Maybe in your twenties
Your first expense account
You blew it all on us,
Two kids you didn’t know
Burgers at Denny’s
And bus tickets home
